Elementary Mathematics
Program

The Prince William County Elementary Mathematics Program addresses the essential learning for the academic content and prescribes what is to be taught at each grade level or course. It provides the framework for all students in Prince William County Public Schools to achieve procedural fluency and conceptual understanding. The curriculum is the foundation for a strong mathematics program that emphasizes problem solving, communication, reasoning and proof, connections, and multiple representations. The Prince William County Mathematics curriculum encompasses the Virginia Standards of Learning. Concepts are introduced and developed through the use of models and hands-on materials. Students apply concepts and skills through a variety of problem-solving experiences.

In January, 2006, Investigations in Number, Data, and Space was adopted as the primary textbook series for the elementary grades. Kindergarten, first and second grades began using these materials in fall of 2006 followed by third grade in 2007. Fourth grade implementation began in the fall of 2008. Fifth grade begins in the fall of 2009. All grade levels are using the revised edition.

Superintendent Presents Message on the PWCS Balanced Approach to Mathematics  (March 5, 2008) Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steven L. Walts spoke at a School Board meeting on March 5 to outline his message of the balanced approach to teaching mathematics, including the use of the “Math Investigations” textbook series, for Prince William County Public Schools. In his message, the Superintendent stated the School Division has a math curriculum that sets out what children should know and be able to do at every grade level. That curriculum, which is aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, has not changed. Read the transcript of this video.
