Summer 2006 Math Professional Development

Math Solutions Summer Math Institute: About Teaching Mathematics
Approximately 140 teachers in grades K-8 attended a week long seminar by Math Solutions during the last week in June. This is the 4th year the Office of Mathematics has made this seminar available to PWCS teachers at no cost to them or their schools. The feedback each year has been terrific.

Summer Investigations Training
The Math Office held 12 one-day sessions this summer primarily for K-2 teachers. Teachers worked in grade level sessions where they were able to learn about Investigations, work with their colleagues, and plan for the first couple of weeks of school. Click here if you are interested in reading more about this training.

TERC Institute for Teachers: Investigations in the Classroom  Approximately three teachers from each of our 55 elementary schools will be attending an intensive week-long institute from August 14 -18. This training  will thoroughly immerse them in the mathematics of Investigations. These teachers will become a great resource  to their grade level teams as they all collaborate, plan and teach math using Investigations in Number, Data, and Space in the fall.

Algebra Content Academy

Twenty-five middle and high school math teachers attended a week-long institute which focused on Algebra I content. Successful teaching strategies and lessons were shared. Utilizing technology, such as graphing calculators and motion detectors, was a major focus of this academy. Teachers looked at year-long planning for teaching the curriculum. The instructors were Cynthia Baird and Paul Mihalko from Brentsville District High School.
